Managed Service Provider (MSP)

A managed service provider runs technology on an ongoing basis on behalf of its clients, typically for a recurring fee. In software partnerships, MSPs both buy tools for their own operations and deploy them into client environments, which makes them unusually high-value partners.

What makes MSPs different

A systems integrator builds something and hands it over. An MSP keeps running it. That ongoing operational relationship means the MSP chooses tools it will live with daily, and that once a tool is embedded across its client base, switching costs are enormous.

One MSP win therefore behaves less like a single customer and more like a distribution agreement, because the tool arrives in every client environment the MSP manages.

How MSP partnerships are structured

Usually as multi-tenant or aggregate licensing: the MSP buys capacity and allocates it across clients, often rebilling with its own margin inside a bundled monthly service fee. The end client frequently does not see the underlying vendor at all, which makes many MSP arrangements white label in practice even when they are not called that.

Vendors serving MSPs need features that standalone customers never ask for: multi-client management from one console, per-client reporting, role separation and usage-based billing.

Winning them

MSPs buy on operational efficiency, not features. The question they are answering is whether a tool reduces the hours their technicians spend per client, because their margin is labour. A product that saves an hour per client per month across two hundred clients sells itself; a product with better functionality that adds any operational overhead does not.

The concentration risk

The same leverage that makes MSPs attractive makes them risky. A vendor with a large share of revenue behind a few MSPs has little visibility into the actual users, no direct relationship to defend, and a serious problem if one of those partners switches. Balancing MSP revenue with direct and affiliate-sourced customers is a deliberate decision worth making early rather than after the concentration exists.
