Turn on the onboarding emails and put your affiliate offer in the first one

After this lesson you can

Enable the automated onboarding sequence, put the offer for the affiliate's audience (a discount or a coupon code) in the first email, and use the sequence to ask for the first action rather than to say welcome.

Reditus gives every program a set of automated onboarding emails, and they are off until you save them. That is the whole reason this lesson exists: a surprising number of programs run for months with a default sequence that has never been enabled, and every affiliate they approved in that time got nothing.

How the sequence works

Each email has a trigger, a delay, a subject and a body, and an enable toggle. The trigger is an affiliate joining your program; the delay is immediate or a number of days after. Disabled emails are not sent. The body takes dynamic values, so it can carry the affiliate's first name, their personal link, their coupon code and the link to your resources without you writing anything twice. Send-and-open stats update once a day.

For reference, the sequence Reditus runs on its own program is a welcome email immediately, and a "how to promote" email three days later. Two emails, both with an ask.

What goes in email one

The offer for their audience, and the first ask. If you give affiliates a discount to pass on to their readers or clients, it belongs in the first email, with the coupon code filled in, because it is the thing they can act on that day. Then the one action from the last lesson, with the link to the material. That is it. Not who you are, not how great the product is; they applied, they know.

Email two, a few days later, is the how: the angles that work, where to find the assets, what the best affiliates in the program do. Later emails, if you use them, each carry one more ask. An onboarding sequence is a series of asks with help attached, not a welcome brochure.

The test that costs nothing

Sign up to your own program as an affiliate with a second address and read the sequence the way they will. If the first email you receive is about you rather than about what they can do, rewrite it. If you receive nothing, the toggles are off.

Key takeaways

  • The onboarding emails are off until you save and enable them. Every affiliate approved before that got nothing.
  • Email one carries the offer for their audience and the first ask. Email two carries the how.
  • Reference sequence: welcome immediately, "how to promote" three days later, both with an ask.
  • Dynamic values fill in the affiliate name, link and coupon code. Coupon codes are one Stripe coupon each.
  • Read the sequence as an affiliate, from a second address.

Do this before the next lesson

Each step says how much counts as done. Doing a third of it and moving on is how programs stall.

Questions we hear at this point

How many onboarding emails should we send, and how often?

Start with two, a welcome that carries the offer and the first ask, and a how-to-promote email a few days later. Add later emails only when each one has a specific ask. Every email should exist to move the affiliate to their first publish, not to keep in touch.

Can affiliates use a discount code instead of a link?

Yes, on the Stripe integration. Create one Stripe coupon per affiliate, put the code in the first onboarding email through the coupon-code value, and any customer who uses it is attributed to that affiliate even without a click. On an API integration, tracking is by link only.
